WELCOME TO THE TYTYRI MINE MUSEUM

Picture: Kari Saaristo

Modern mining in Lohja began in 1897, when the industrial exploitation of limestone was started. Captain Karl Forström from Särkisalo then established a lime kiln, which grew to one of the largest industrial companies in Finland.

Today the Tytyri mine is owned by Nordkalk Corporation. Partek Nordkalk is the leading producer of limestone-based products in northern Europe. It produces crushed, ground and screened limestone as well as burnt and slaked lime in Finland, Sweden, the Baltic countries and in Poland under a common trademark - Nordkalk. The subsidiary Suomen Karbonatti Oy produces paper pigments.
